The Habitable Zone

A star's habitable zone is the region around it in which planets could have liquid water on its surface.

The diagram shows the habitable zones GREEN
The BLUE areas are too cold; any liquid surface water would be completely frozen.
The RED areas are too hot; the liquid surface water would be lost as a result of a runaway greenhouse effect.

The Habitable Zone in the Solar System

Only the Earth and Mars are in the habitable zone because we could find  liquid water in them.
